Premiership Final
03/06/2010
Twickenham, the home of English rugby was the setting for the biggest club game in the world. Leicester Tigers, the English power house of rugby and defending champions took on a resurgent Saracens. Saracens were coming off the back of a nail biting win at Northampton Saints in the semi-final, and though the underdogs were playing with a style of rugby that makes the game exciting.
The game played in front of a capacity crowd on a slightly dreary day proved to be one of the best games I have ever witnessed. Each side tore into each other, exchanging huge tackles and scything attacks. The scrum was dominated by the Tigers, who's overall quality was just enough to edge the first half which contained some great tries.
Saracens hit back time and again with some exciting running which meant I was so glued to my seat I failed to get to the bar. The last few minutes provided the right amount of drama to end an enthralling season. Saracens, 2 points behind had a penalty near the posts, with the Tigers fans almost in tears as the kick went over it looked like Saracens had nicked it with only 1 minute to go. You could almost see the Saracens fans popping champagne to celebrate a first title, but to their disbelief an inspired kick of from the Tigers saw their winger, Hamilton, steal the ball and pass to Hipkiss who's powerful run from the 22 meant he could slip the tackles and score the decisive try. Taking the Tigers from the brink of defeat to yet another Championship.
As a Saints fan I was gutted that we didn't make it to the final, but Leicester deserved it, not least as it was a last game for Lewis Moody, a great Tigers servant who is off to pastures new with another medal.
Congratulations Leicester, Premiership champions for another year, I look forward to seeing the Saints beating you next year.
